An Overview

JSPS Standard Programme An Overview

The standard programme is a great opportunity to join us here at iCeMS for a period of 12 – 24 months for a research fellowship.

The award includes a round-trip air ticket, a settling-in allowance of ¥200,000 and a ¥362,000 monthly maintenance allowance. Below is a guide to the standard programme and how you can apply to join us here in Kyoto.

Eligibility Criteria

JSPS Standard Programme Eligibility Criteria
  1. Be a citizen of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan (Taiwan and Palestine are included in this).
  2. Candidates must have obtained their doctoral degree within six years of the date that the fellowship goes into effect.

Notes:

  1. Those who have previously received a fellowship under the JSPS Postdoctoral Programme (Standard, and Pathway to University in Japan) are not eligible.
  2. As well as this, people who are Japanese citizens or those with permitted residence in Japan are not eligible.
  3. If selected as a fellow, you must submit an original copy of the doctoral degree certificate or diploma before starting (not required when applying).

One method of application is by applying direct to JSPS.
They call for applications twice a year for the standard programme with the next deadline being the 6th May 2022.

ONA Application

However, the preferable method of application is through one of JSPS’s Overseas Nominating Authorities.

Countries have their own nominating authority to which you can apply to. Then, if successful, they will make an application to JSPS on your behalf.

But, it is important to note that each authority will have different methods and requirements for applications as well as deadlines. As such, it is essential you do your research on the relevant nominating authority.

The JSPS Short-Term Programme An Overview

The short-term programme offers a great opportunity to join us here in Kyoto for a period of 1-12 months for a research fellowship.
The award includes a round-trip air ticket, a settling-in allowance of ¥200,000 if the fellowship is longer than 3 months, and a monthly maintenance allowance of ¥200,000 for non-PhD fellows, and ¥362,000 for those with a PhD.

Eligibility Criteria

The JSPS Short-Term Programme Eligibility Criteria 01
  1. Be a citizen or permanent resident of an eligible country (US, Canada, EU States, UK, Switzerland, Norway and Russia), or have been engaged in research for at least three years in an eligible country.  You must also be from a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan (Taiwan and Palestine included) and must have conducted research continuously for three or more years prior to applying.
  2. Candidates must have obtained their doctoral degree outside of Japan and within six years of the date the fellowship goes into effect, or must be enrolled in a doctoral course outside Japan, and scheduled to receive a Ph.D. within two years from the fellowship start date.

Notes:

  1. Those who have previously received a fellowship under the JSPS Postdoctoral Programme (Standard, Short-Term and Pathway to University in Japan) are not eligible.
  2. As well as this, those who have resident cards with addresses in Japan at JSPS’s application deadline are not eligible.
  3. In addition, a Japanese citizen who is a permanent resident of any eligible country is not eligible.
  4. If selected as a fellow, you must submit an original copy of the doctoral degree certificate or diploma (or if you have not completed then the original copy of your prospect certificate is necessary) before the fellowship starting date (not required when applying).

They call for applications three times a year for the short-term programme with the deadlines being the 8th October 2020, 15 January 2021, and the 4th June 2021.
